Established in 2010 to promote fundamental research in all areas of abstract algebra and its applications to modern
technology.
Mission:
The mission of the Center is to promote fundamental research in Algebra and its Applications and to become the
leading center in the Middle East. The Center seeks:
(i) sponsoring programs that stimulate cutting-edge research in algebra and its applications.
(ii) establishing contacts with individuals and research centers with the intention to initiate collaboration on
research projects of common interest.
(iii) attracting outstanding students, research scholars, and post-doctoral fellows that would lead to joint
publications.
Description:
Our objective is to have a center of excellence that will bring high quality scholarly environment at KAU.
The Center will organize workshops and conferences. The Center will initiate permanent and well-defined programs for
bringing eminent speakers and promising young scholars to the campus. The core idea is to create a research park
which is sustainable and continually blooming. This would help in achieving excellence in both undergraduate and
graduate instruction and research.
MECAA would be an International Center in which people from all over can come and stay for a month or more and
participate in MECAA activities and interact with faculty. In particular those faculty members who are on sabbatical
leave are invited to spend their leave at the center. Partial support is available. This would stimulate
collaboration and communication with scholars from all over the world. In particular, the faculty and the graduate
students would benefit by meeting with prominent speakers and thus developing relations for the future collaboration
in research projects.
MECAA would encourage research on applications to several areas; particularly in Information theory, Coding theory
and Cryptography.
Activities of the Center:
(i) We propose four lecture series. Each series will run for three to five days, meeting 60- 90 minutes each day.
These lectures will be given by experts in their field. The first day in any lecture series will be designed to be
particularly accessible to undergraduate and beginning graduate students and will provide a general overview of the
field of research. The lectures on the following days will be more detailed and geared towards upper level graduate
students and faculty researchers.
There will be ample time for questions during or after the lectures. The Lecture Series will include topics in the
fields of Non-commutative Rings, Commutative Rings, Modules, Representation Theory, Finite Groups, Infinite Groups,
Coding Theory, Cryptography, Algebraic Geometry, Number Theory, and Applications.
(ii) In addition, we will run two short courses on the mainstream topics so that the persons who want to jump into
new areas of research can move in more quickly and confidently. The speaker generally begins slowly in a way that a
graduate level student can appreciate and may get inspired, and then leading up to the present state of art.
Furthermore, it is intended to make the text of lectures available on-line.
(iii) MECAA will start organizing International Conferences regularly every three years.
(iv) MECAA will provide facilities, such as office space and secretarial help to the visitors.
(v) MECAA will make the lecture series available for distribution in a preprint series of the Center.
